RWCS Gear List
***Bolded items can be borrowed from school***

  • backpack (50 liter minimum [larger for 6-8], multi-day capacity, internal or external frame, padded waist belt, sternum strap)
  • backpack cover, or 55 gallon contractor trash bag
  • rain gear: top and bottom (no ponchos or thin PVC)
  • shade hat
  • warm hat: non-cotton
  • warm layers: non-cotton (fleece), 2 top and 1 bottom
  • thermal long underwear: top and bottom, non-cotton (we have some)
  • shorts: non-cotton
  • long pants: non-cotton (soccer pants are okay)
  • shirts: non-cotton is preferable but cotton is okay; wear one, bring one—that is enough (1 more shirt allowed for 6-8)
  • socks: at least three non-cotton pairs (merino wool or poly pro—sold at Walmart and all outdoor stores)
  • underpants (2 is enough)
  • hiking boots/shoes: water resistant (stiff midsole w/ aggressive tread)
  • lightweight camp/river shoes (water shoes, old tennis shoes, sandals that strap tightly, NO flip flops!)
  • mummy sleeping bag with stuff sack: non-cotton (minimum 25 degree rating)
  • lightweight sleeping pad
  • lightweight flashlight and batteries (headlamp preferable)
  • toiletries: toothbrush, contact lens supplies, feminine hygiene, etc.
  • durable water bottles: 2 liters worth (CamelBak or equivalent is okay)
  • cup, bowl, and spoon (an old yogurt cup and an old metal spoon work great, and plastic travel cup for hot cocoa is also good to have)
  •  medicine(s) you need, and bring an extra set for leaders (If your child uses an Epi pen or Albuterol, please let the staff know. We bring a full med kit so we carry Advil, Tylenol, etc.)

Do NOT bring valuables, money, candy or snacks, cell phones, fireworks, weapons, illicit substances or electronics (cameras are OK)
But you CAN bring: book, playing cards, sketch book, camera

NOTE: Safety in the backcountry depends on having the right clothes and gear.
  • Cotton warm layers absorb moisture and can be hazardously cold in harsh mountain weather.
  • As a group we will be carrying everything necessary for survival. Please do not bring anything extra. Your extra items will impact the group by adding to the weight we have to carry.
  • You do not need to invest in expensive gear. We’d much rather have your donation to run our program than have it go to buying specialized gear that will be quickly outgrown. Many of the above items can be found in second hand stores OR BORROWED from us--see BOLD items above.
Please feel free to call with any questions: 575-586-2076.
